Frequently Asked Questions

Why take a mushroom supplement?

Mushrooms are incredibly unique organisms, being neither plants nor animals. Unsurprisingly, they also possess very unique nutrient profiles. Many incredible compounds are still being discovered in mushrooms, and mushrooms’ potential as superfood continue to be realized. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest mushroom supplements can improve the immune system, improve memory and cognition, strength, endurance, help regulate blood sugar and blood glucose, "detoxify", help fight cancer, and more.

Why did the serving size change from 1/4 tsp to 1/2 tsp?

We decided our original suggested serving size of 700mg was more conservative than it needed to be, and a more appropriate serving would be 1,000mg (1g), which is what is considered a proper dose in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The serving size has increased by 300mg.

However, you'll likely notice that the ratio of tsp:mg between bags will now fail to correlate because our original measure of how much powder fits into a teaspoon was slightly off.

A teaspoon is kind of a lousy unit of measure. It’s a measure of volume which makes it less accurate than grams (which measure mass). The old packaging suggests a 700mg serving size wherein there’s 100mg of each mushroom. This is correct. Where we went wrong was in stating that 700mg is ¼ tsp; this was measured slightly wrong. ¼ tsp is actually more like 500mg.

The new packaging more accurately reflects the mass of powder which fits in a teaspoon (2g; or 1g per ½ tsp). Mushroom powder is extremely low-density and “fluffy”. This makes it easy to mis-measure how much fits into a teaspoon if the powder is compacted too much or not enough.

Originally, we had performed the measurement ourselves. The new measurement was performed by our third-party copacker with more accurate equipment, and they informed us that our measure was slightly off.

The teaspoon measurements are not a mandatory labeling requirement; we include it only to give folks a relatable measure so they know how much to use. If you ignore the teaspoon measures altogether, then both the old and the new labels are accurate.

Old label: 700mg serving size (100mg of each mushroom)
New label: 1,000mg serving size (143mg of each mushroom)

TLDR: The serving size changed from 1/4 tsp to 1/2 tsp. The ratio of teaspoons:mg's between bags will now fail to correlate because our original measurement of how much powder fits into a teaspoon was slightly off. The new updated label is the most accurate and it's the one that should be followed.

Should I feel something? How do I know the mushrooms are working?

We encourage users of all supplements to have realistic expectations. While many users report feeling physical benefits like increased energy or clear-mindedness when using mushroom supplements, it's also not uncommon to feel nothing at all. However, this doesn't necessarily mean they're not benefiting you.

Research supports the ability of mushrooms to have a positive impact on a number of biomarkers including blood lipids and cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, cortisol, NGF and BDNF, and many more.

These micro-level health improvements may be impossible to "feel" or to "notice", but they may still be significantly impactful to overall health. Prevention is also an important tenet of herbal medicine, and sometimes the absence of maladies can speak to the effectiveness of mushrooms as much as anything else.

At the end of the day, mushrooms are essentially superfood extracts. One doesn't eat a cup of blueberries and expect to "feel" something, but nevertheless it's understood that they're going to benefit your health. It's becoming well known in the scientific community that nutrition affects the genome. The things you eat turn on and off good and bad genes, which affects the propensity for disease.

Mushrooms are incredibly valuable to human health for the utter wealth of micronutrients and minerals they contain. For us, this is enough. No need to "feel" something.

What's the macronutrient breakdown (i.e. Calories, carbohydrate, fat, and protein) of your mushrooms?

Mushrooms are very low in Calories, with 1g of mushroom powder being only 3-5 Calories. Mushrooms are approximately 58% carbohydrate, 25% protein, 3% fat, and 14% micronutrients like vitamins and minerals.

When taken at suggested serving sizes, mushroom powders should not meaningfully interrupt a fast.

Do you test your mushrooms for heavy metals and other contaminants?

Absolutely. Our mushrooms are tested twice for heavy metals and other hallmarks of purity. They're sent to numerous different third-party labs who specialize in different analyses including heavy metals, microbiological, stability, and ingredient identity verification testing. We are happy to provide certificates of analysis upon request.

Are your mushrooms psychoactive (Will they get me high)?

No. None of our products are psychoactive or will elicit a high. Nothing we sell contains psilocybin (the hallucinogenic compound found in "magic" mushrooms).

How many times a day can I take Sacred 7?

A proper dosage of medicinal mushrooms can be quite arbitrary, and may vary widely based on an individual and his or her health needs and goals. That's why we recommend starting with a conservative amount. Would taking more be better? Possibly, depending on your needs and goals. More advanced users of the product are welcome to devise different dosing protocols they feel are more appropriate for them. Overall, mushroom powders are very safe, even in much higher doses than what's recommended.

Can I give Sacred 7 to my dog?

Absolutely! Mushrooms aren't only good for people. Dogs can greatly benefit from mushroom supplements in some of the same ways people can. Man's best friend deserves a boost too!

We recommend about 1/8th of a teaspoon of Sacred 7, added to food, for small dogs. For medium and large dogs, scale up accordingly. Just be sure to double check with your veterinarian first.

How does shipping work?

Our standard shipping within the U.S. costs $3.00 and is carried by USPS. If your order is $50.00 or more, shipping is free within the U.S. Orders typically arrive in 3-7 business days, but this isn't a guarantee.

International shipping varies by country. Please be aware that your order may be subject to duties and other fees based on your country. Orders typically arrive in 7-21 business days. Sadly we aren't able to ship to every country due to high rates of rejection by some countries' customs. If your country doesn't appear to be supported, feel free to send us a message to verify.

For all orders, a tracking number is sent by email after the order is placed.

We are not responsible for lost or missing orders due to addresses typed incorrectly at checkout. It is the customer's responsibility to enter their shipping address correctly.

Sacred 7 smells like cocoa. Are you sure there's no cocoa powder in it?

There is no cocoa powder or any other ingredients in Sacred 7. It is 100% mushrooms.

The seven mushrooms in combination naturally have a very rich smell (often described as “chocolatey”). Mushrooms contain naturally-occurring compounds called terpenes which are very fragrant.

We agree the smell is uncanny, but it's not from cocoa powder - it's the mushrooms themselves. They're high-quality whole mushrooms, and they simply have a rich, sweet smell.

Our products are produced in a tightly-regulated facility with stringent quality control standards. The facility tests the product multiple times, and they will not allow anything to be in the product which is not on the label. Given our facility’s oversight, not to mention our own integrity, it simply isn’t possible for us to add ingredients we don’t disclose. Please feel free to request a certificate of analysis.

To clarify a final time, Original Sacred 7 is made from 100% whole mushrooms. It does NOT contain any cocoa powder whatsoever.

What extraction ratios and processes are used in your products?

In Sacred 7, our mushrooms undergo what’s called a 1:1 hot water extraction.

The water used is purified with an ultra-filtration system. Our tinctures utilize a dual extraction process of hot water and alcohol. Their menstruum ratio is 1:5.

These processes ensure that the active constituents in the mushrooms become bioavailable. The resulting extracts are much higher in compounds like beta-glucans, triterpenes, and other powerful mycocompounds.

Why don't your products list the percentage of beta-glucans?

Our individual mushrooms are tested for beta-glucans by our grower, and they do test at over 20%. However, when we blend them together and package them we are required to perform an additional beta-glucans test. Since we don't perform this additional test, we cannot state the beta-glucan content on the packaging if we want to remain FDA-compliant.

Does the Tincture require refrigeration?

Neither of our Chaga or Lion's Mane tinctures require refrigeration. Since they're extracted partly with high-proof cane spirits, they are inherently averse to spoilage. Their Miron glass bottle also does its part to maintain the freshness and integrity of the product.

You're out of stock, when will you have more?

Sometimes the inventory used to fulfill our website orders runs out. When this happens, we often need to wait until our next manufacturing run is completed in order to restock.

If we're out of stock here, please also check Amazon by visiting www.amazon.com/naturealm. We often hold even more inventory at Amazon's warehouses than at our own. There's a good chance that if we're out of stock here, we still have plenty of stock for purchase there.

Where else are your products sold?

Our two primary sales channels are our website (here) and Amazon (www.amazon.com/naturealm). We're the exclusive seller of our products on Amazon (no one else is permitted to sell them), but please do still make sure you're not buying from a reseller. Once in a while Amazon lets one slip through the cracks. It should read, "Sold by: Naturealm".

We also sell in a small number of brick-and-mortar retail locations and health clinics.

We do not sell on Ebay. Any Naturealm products on Ebay are listed by resellers and can't be guaranteed to be authentic, fresh, or safe. Please don't shop for our products there.
